Still haven’t started the V8 install. Working on reinforcing the rear subframe at the moment. Truck is in the bodyshop, after I was driven into on the highway near Philly. Thankfully, her insurance company didn’t try to total it & is paying the full $2600 to fix where she drove into the pass door & 1/4 panel with her Chevy Equinox.

It appears that what happens with these is that the members (18, 19) twist, then the aluminum torque rods (31,34) pretzel.

Some have boxed the subframe sections entirely, or bridge the L&R subframe sections in part or with solid panels. Since I have spare sets of these, I’m going to double the L & R sections. I started on it today. I’m also thinking of adding additional bushings on either side at the rear

Driver’s side mostly done here. I’m leaving the addition of a second pair of rear upper bushings until I can be sure there is nothing to interfere.

Haven’t seam welded the sections, not sure I will need to. Not .16″ – 105″

Spacers inside the welded sections at the mount points to prevent compression

Looking at this, I can add a weld to the sleeves inside here for additional strength.

Found longer bolts for the torque mounts & forward pin

These exhaust hanger studs have to be extended to pass through the revised thickness. Don’t need spacers here, there’s no compression happening.

4 spacers cut for right side pair

Image

These main spacers are to be welded in place on the inner section before sandwiching

Image

These I drilled out the holes, and am welding them on either side

right side prepped for welding

As you can see the sections are not entirely uniform in fit, I carefully pulled the two sections together & tacked on the left side, being certain to make sure there was no distortion or twisting that would impact the spacing of the mount pins at the bushing. I’ll do the same for the right pair

Image

I’m going to add 3-4 cross braces to tie them together, at regular intervals

Image

Additional rear upper supports would be along these lines, they will be boxed

I have angle iron in the same wall thickness to use for joiners

There appears to be plenty of room up there, based on this pic from another T’Bricker
