How To Deter Bugs From Your HVAC Unit | Sherlock Plumbing Heating & Air

While there are creepy-crawlies all over this great planet of ours, the last thing you probably want to think about is finding bugs in HVAC equipment at your home. The good news is that keeping these pests out of your system isn’t too difficult as long as you follow a few simple tips:

Fill Any Cracks or Gaps Near Your Equipment

Every homeowner knows that cracks and gaps develop all over a person’s household, especially around doors and windows. This also happens around the edges of your HVAC equipment or close enough to it that bugs can slip right into the system itself. Filling any problem areas will fix this.

Check Your Ductwork

A common way for insects and arachnids to find their way into your HVAC equipment is through tears and gaps that have formed in your home’s ductwork. Just like the tip above, you want to fill in any problem areas to keep them out, which also includes checking for loosened joints and areas where rust and corrosion has occurred. This will lower your exposure to these pests.

Control Any Vegetation Around Your Outdoor Unit

As you’re surely aware, bugs are attracted to vegetation. If grass, flowers, or other types of plants are close to your HVAC system’s outdoor unit, then these pests can easily make their way into your HVAC equipment. To be safe, keep two feet of cleared space around each side of the unit. This should provide a reasonable buffer zone to keep them out and ensure sufficient airflow your system needs.

Install Screens on Outdoor Air Vents

Air vents without screens provide a perfect conduit into your home for the tiniest of critters. Mesh screens that cover the entire vent will do wonders in keeping insects and arachnids at bay. They won’t cost much and are highly effective.
