HVACR and plumbing systems are an essential part of any construction project. From collaborating with other trades in designing new building projects, to retrofitting, repairing and maintaining existing structures and systems, plumbing, heating and cooling professionals are on the frontline when it comes to providing essential services.
Plumbers and HVACR technicians are not only needed for new building developments, but also in times of crisis, such as after floods or hurricanes, to ensure indoor environments are kept safe, working properly and comfortable.
While HVACR and plumbing trades are of utmost importance, there is a growing shortage of skilled workers; U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the number of HVAC technicians has declined by more than 50% in the last decade, and the industry will need approximately 114,500 qualified new workers by 2028. The aging workforce and a poor perception of the trades as a career are just some of the factors that have contributed to its steady decline. However, those who venture into the industry typically find a very rewarding and fulfilling career. With the industry’s dynamic nature, technicians are reminded every day of the importance of staying up to date on skills and requirements. Rapidly evolving technology and the introduction of smart control systems, as well as new regulations for sustainable solutions and energy-efficient equipment, all point to the need for continuous training and better workforce development.
President Trump’s recent Executive Order focused on worker investment and development recognizes the need to invest in more skilled trades and train them to execute the job properly and confidently. However, the effort is not only limited to closing the labor shortage gap and promoting the industry among newcomers, but also among the seasoned professionals looking to keep pace with sustainable technologies, smart equipment and systems, along with new regulations.
Educational resources at disposal
The Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Educational Foundation offers a comprehensive educational resource, providing training and innovative courses to enhance the growth and success of the plumbing and HVACR industry workforce. The PHCC Educational Foundation hosts a plethora of online curriculums on the PHCC Academy platform, where industry professionals at any career level can find continuing education to help them break into the industry or obtain state accreditation or licensing.
For example, someone interested in becoming a plumber or HVACR technician can enroll in pre-apprenticeship courses, which introduce them to the trades and cover some of the basic principles of the job, safety considerations and common systems and products. They can serve both as an introduction or a refresher course. Apprenticeship courses, on the other hand, are a four-year program done in collaboration with an employer, which aid them in honing the skills necessary to properly install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair HVACR systems, as well as have an understanding of math and science principles related to HVACR.
For technicians who have already completed an apprenticeship program and seek further professional development, the Foundation offers advanced HVACR courses to provide more robust training using the latest industry technologies. The curriculum covers how to install, maintain and troubleshoot HVACR systems, offers an overview of smart technology and energy-efficient equipment and teaches indoor air-quality solutions to help students keep pace with industry advancements.
Obtaining the proper licensing and certifications is another consideration for industry professionals. New certification preparatory courses, equipping technicians with the proper knowledge and confidence to work with refrigerants in the field, were recently added to the curriculum. These courses address EPA Section 608 and low-GWP refrigerants to ensure both proper handling and installation in accordance with the Clean Air Act, but also to meet federal licensing requirements.
Soft skills in the HVACR and plumbing industries are often overlooked or considered less important than technical skills because of the nature of the work. However, like in any job, continuing education is important at all staffing levels from the administrative side to management. Understanding the importance of customer service, team communication and leadership, as well as problem-solving skills, the Foundation has developed The Business Leadership Essentials course for professionals who want to enhance their business acumen.
Forward outlook
The HVACR and plumbing industries are going through a transformative shift as new innovations are being introduced to market. At the same time, the demand for skilled labor proficient in industry trends is expected to continue to rise, empowering industry professionals to keep in step with the technological advancements. Ultimately, educational resources, continuous learning and workforce development are benefitting industry professionals, while shaping the future generations of technicians of tomorrow.
